Inspiration
The idea for Carbon Blueprint came from a simple realization — most of us want to reduce our carbon footprint, but we don’t have the right tools to measure it. Whether it’s flying for work, using electricity, or just browsing online, every action adds up. I wanted to build something that made it easy for individuals and small businesses to track their impact in one place.
What it does
Carbon Blueprint is a simple environmental impact tracker. It allows users to select a reporting period and log emissions across categories like:
- Business Travel (by flight type and distance)
- Hotel Stays
- Company Vehicles
- Electricity & Gas
- Water Usage
- Waste Management
- Website & Internet usage
Once data is entered, the app calculates total CO₂ emissions and displays:
- Emission trends
- Equivalent trees needed to offset
- Car mileage equivalent
- Smart tips to reduce impact
- Option to export reports as PDF
It’s clean, fast, and designed to help users make better choices.
How we built it
I built the project using Bolt.new as the primary development platform. The front end is structured using Bolt’s UI tools, while the calculations for emissions are based on standard estimation logic. The app is deployed using Netlify.
I used ChatGPT to help with some of the written content.
Challenges we ran into
- Making the interface simple while keeping the logic accurate
- Designing clean input flows for different emission categories
- Staying within the limits of Bolt.new without needing external services
It was also a challenge to explain the carbon output in ways that feel relatable to users, like showing trees or car mileage.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Completed a full working prototype from scratch
- Built a smooth, modular UI that works well on desktop
- Created a real-time dashboard with actionable insights
- Deployed a clean, working version in just a few days
What we learned
- How to build faster using Bolt.new
- How to break down technical environmental data into simple user inputs
- That great UI/UX can make even serious topics more approachable
What's next for Carbon Blueprint
- Add more emission types (like shipping or manufacturing)
- Connect to APIs for auto-detection of energy use
- Enable saving multiple projects/accounts
- Improve accuracy of calculations with verified datasets
- Make it available on mobile
The goal is to help more people understand their carbon impact and take smarter actions — one step at a time.
