Inspiration

The Carbon Footprint Calculator was inspired by the growing urgency to address climate change and help individuals understand their personal environmental impact.I wanted to create a tool that not only tracks carbon emissions but also would help users make more sustainable choices in their daily lives while highlighting the potential cost savings of these changes. The vision was to provide a simple, accessible solution for people looking to reduce their footprint and contribute to a greener future.

What it does

The Carbon Footprint Calculator allows users to estimate their carbon emissions across four key areas: food, energy, waste, and transportation. It calculates their environmental impact, offers personalized suggestions to reduce their emissions, and highlights their potential cost savings. Additionally, it compares their emissions to the average American, providing context and motivation for improvement.

How we built it

It was built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to ensure a clean, user-friendly interface. The project involves input forms where users provide information on their habits, and the tool dynamically calculates emissions and provides feedback. It also includes visually appealing elements inspired by minimalist, sleek designs to engage users and encourage interaction—and drive home the element of being ‘clean’.

Challenges we ran into

One major challenge was ensuring the accuracy of the carbon calculations and offering meaningful, personalized suggestions for each user—and we had to integrate an API to do so. Another challenge was finding the right balance between aesthetic design and functionality—ensuring the interface was not only visually appealing but also intuitive and easy to use. Lastly, integrating cost-saving metrics alongside carbon reduction suggestions required a lot of additional research to deliver practical and accurate insights.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of creating a visually compelling tool that merges design and sustainability. Another key accomplishment was implementing dynamic, real-time comparisons between individual carbon footprints and national average—which provides meaningful context for users. In addition, I started coding two months ago, and while this is not the most elegant or complex solution—the fact that it functions is the biggest accomplishment of all.

What we learned

We learned a lot about carbon emission tracking and howour everyday behaviours significantly impact the environment. We also gained a deeper understanding of how to use web technologies to create a smoother and more interactive user experience. We also realized the importance of providing actionable, specific advice for reducing emissions—as well as the psychological impact of showing users their progress relative to national standards.

What's next for Carbon Footprint Calculator

Next, we plan to expand the functionality of the calculator by integrating more personalized data—such as specific regional energy grids or transportation methods. We also aim to develop mobile and desktop apps for broader accessibility. Also, adding a social sharing feature will enable users to showcase their progress and inspire others to reduce their carbon footprint. We also plan to explore partnerships with eco-friendly organizations to offer users rewards for reducing their emissions—creating a stronger incentive to take action.
