Inspiration

In our team we choose carefully what we put in our plates. But it is always difficult to choose between all the different variant of a product. Therefore we've brainstorm around an app that could help in that selection, given different factors. For this hackathon, we've especially developed the sustainable side, taking into account the eco score provided by stores.

What it does

Carbon FoodPrint raises awareness towards our food consumption by providing an eco score from a dish picture or its list of ingredients.

How we built it

We've looked for models that can output ingredients or a recipe given a picture. We've then setup up a simple API that uses the Migros store to retrieve products given an ingredient name. We've then evaluated a general eco score for each ingredient, which are used to compute an overall score for the dish/recipe.

Challenges we ran into

The initial goal was to propose an alternative and more sustainable recipe given the picture, but we didn't find a model to provide such alternatives.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

After less than 24h we've built a really simple app, than can really

What we learned

Beef has a really bad eco score (1/5)

What's next for Carbon FoodPrint

The app can be extended in many ways:

  • provide the exact products one can buy for each ingredient. These products can be filter by most sustainable or less pricy.
  • We could include different store data (ex. Coop, Aligros, local producers, etc)
