Background

Climate change is a severe issue in our society today. While most people believe that the way to combat this issue is through less cars on the road, the food humans eat greatly impacts the environment. The food industry accounts for 15.4% of global car emissions, 75% of human land use, and is the main cause of eutrophication in water systems.

Purpose

Our website calculates the carbon footprint of a certain meal that the user inputs. Users can choose from a variety of fruits, vegetables, carbs, proteins, and beverages. Also, we have displayed multiple graphs showcasing the different environmental impacts of various foods.

Development

For the website development, we used mostly Flask. We used the pandas libraries in Python for data manipulation of the dataset. To plot the graphs, we used matplotlib and seaborn libraries.

Problems

In the beginning of the hackathon, we tried to create a therapy chatbot; however, we decided to take a more creative approach to the theme and create an original project. We lost a few hours in making the therapy chatbot, and we didn't know how to code in Flask but we overcame these difficulties.

What we learned

We learned a lot of coding techniques in this project and developed our teamwork skills.
