Inspiration

Sustainability is a very hot topic these days, especially with all the issues related to climate change that we are seeing around the world. We wanted to create a tool that provides users with an estimate of how much CO2 is emitted by eating certain foods.

What it does

There are a couple questions that the user must answer specifying how much of certain food types / groups they eat. Then, based on their answers, the program will tell them if their carbon FOODprint is below the average Canadian's, above, or more than twice. If they are in either of the latter two categories, they will see a list of links to suggested low-carbon recipes.

How we built it

The framework is built Visual Studio Code. We used React to create an interactive calculator, and we styled it using CSS.

Challenges we ran into

We found that research for this project was not as easy as we anticipated it would be. It was quite hard to convert all the data we found to a standardized unit of measurement.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we were able to combine two of our passions, sustainability and computer science. We think this interface is also very easy to use so its easily accessible to all!

What we learned

It was our first time using CSS, so we had to deal with a bit of a learning curve. Super fun though!

What's next for Carbon FoodPrint

We would like to expand our project, Carbon Foodprint, to include the carbon footprint of lifestyle elements. We would find the carbon footprint of ways of transportation and types of electricity used at home and would add their total with our foodprint.
