Inspiration
I had the idea to create a comparison of carbon dioxide equivalent values in my AP Environmental Science class when I realized the large ecological impact of many things that we do without thinking, like turning on the lights or eating a snack. I wanted to be able to compare things that I use to each other so I could better understand what to do to reduce my impact.
What it does
It allows the user to compare the impact on global warming of their actions to other actions.
How I built it
I made a simple script that took in data about the names and impacts of arbitrary things, then found online data that detailed the environmental impact per unit.
Challenges I ran into
It was hard to find the data I wanted. I was unable to find any APIs, so I had to manually copy the data from the internet. I planned to include the environmental impact of a plastic SOLO fork, but was unable to find data on the environmental impact of the type of plastic used.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I can add new things very quickly given just the environmental data on that item.
What I learned
Food has an extremely high impact compared to transportation and electricity.
What's next for Carbon Dioxide Comparison
I might add more things to compare between. Getting the nvarner.me link to work
