Inspiration

Highway vehicles contribute almost 1.4 billion tons of greenhouse gases(mostly in the form of CO2) to the atmosphere, fueling the ever growing problem of climate change. A solution to this is to reduce our usage of vehicles, but everyone uses a car in our society making it very difficult to make the sacrifice. That is why the next best solution is to counteract the emissions by tracking them and taking the initiative to respond in a positive way, for example by planting more trees.

What it does

Our webapp takes your location every 10 seconds while you are driving and maps the distance you have traveled. Using this distance we calculate your total carbon emissions for the session using your car models known carbon dioxide emission in grams per kilometer.

How we built it

We used Svelte (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), GitHub, and Figma.

Challenges we ran into

We were pretty new to web development, not knowing how to use Svelte and JavaScript, so it was challenging doing the research and getting all the components working in time for the deadline.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we were able to get a solid plan that we really liked together and that we were able to get the website working.

What we learned

We learned a lot about website building, designing and all the work that we had to put in to bring our idea to fruition.

What's next for Carbon Catcher

We want to continue to polish up the User Interface, implement backend to save user data, and be able to make this into a mobile application that works great.
