Inspiration
As passionate high schoolers, we noticed that there is a severe lack of knowledge in personal responsibility of climate change. We decided that we needed to educate about individual impacts, but knew that a slab of text would be disengaging to people our age. Thus, we decided to make an interactive calculator and game about saving the world, one tree at a time.
What it does
Carbon Canopy has two distinct parts: A carbon footprint calculator and a game. The carbon footprint calculator uses various metrics such as country, energy source (coal, oil, natural gas, nuclear etc.), power used to calculate individual energy consumption. The single player game encourages players to plant trees, with mechanics to water them using the lever at the left and pressing "f", causing rain to fall. In launching the page.html in the calc folder, the calculator is produced, with a link to the game at the bottom. The game uses "a" and "d" to move, and "e" to plant trees. How we built it
This project was built entirely using HTML, CSS, and JS. It included custom made sprites, and progressions of trees. We used CSVs as a database, and integrated two distinct pages in our project. Our custom made sprites were difficult to implement at first, but we were able to persist. We decided against the use of JS frameworks like ReactJS to decrease framework overhead, and streamline production. Overall, we are very proud of creating both a calculator and a singleplayer game in the course of a single day. Both aspects of our multi-faceted project were able to function better than expected, and we learned to work much better in a team.
