Inspiration
Our inspiration was an assignment in our freshman honors biology class which we had to learn about carbon footprints, calculate how much we had, and brainstorm ways that we could realistically do to reduce the amount of carbon we produce.
What it does
It asks you questions regarding things that creates a lot of carbon emissions and calculates how much carbon footprint you have, then it takes what
How we built it
We made it in CodeHS using the JavaScript Console. We also used ChatGPT for some help with checking our code and getting some information on the equations needed to calculate the carbon footprint.
Challenges we ran into
Since this is our first hackathon, where none of our team knew what to do, we had to figure out basically everything ourselves. One of our team members also had to leave early, so that left two of us with little coding experience. Another problem was that we weren't able to do anything in the first few hours because we were still figuring things out, which left us with much less time to make our project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of being able to actually be able to get work done and make the calculator work. We're also proud of the fact that despite this being our first hackathon with little to no prior knowledge on what we're supposed to do, we worked together to make this project.
What we learned
First of all, we learned how to use AI to help with coding without making it do all the work for us, but also how to make a working calculator that uses multiple equations to solve a problem. We also learned how much carbon is emitted by doing things we normally do in our everyday lives and more simple ways that helped us reduce it. It also forced us to learn to check every single thing in our code (especially the numbers) to make the calculation more accurate.
