Inspiration
We were inspired by the worsening climate crisis, and how natural disasters are getting closer to more populated cities year by year.
What it does
The website allows us to calculate the carbon saved by taking alternative transportation and storing it in the website to see how much carbon the website prevents from entering the atmosphere.
How we built it
We used google maps to track the routes the user wants to take, and firebase to create accounts to save the carbon saved for each user.
Challenges we ran into
We had issues importing google maps and firebase, as it was our fire time using both these apis. It took the majority of the time we spent on this project to figure out how to utilize them.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the accounts feature, as well as the functional maps feature as it took us a long time to get them working.
What we learned
We learned how to use firebase for authenticating users and how to create interactive google maps for a website.
What's next for Carbon Calculator
- profile page
- automatic redirect to maps with destination after clicking "Save the earth !!!"
- more ways to reduce carbon footprint
- more customizable by inserting car type and mileage per gallon (currently using National average)
- Better looking
- More Secure Authentication
