Carbon Buster

Inspiration We took inspiration from Earth Overshoot day and the Food Standards Agency traffic light system to empower consumers to make informed decisions about the carbon footprint of the products they are purchasing.

Features Our app lets the user sign up with a username and password and navigate to a different pages; 'Challenges'; 'Scanner'; 'Inbox'; 'Homescreen'. The Challenges page will allow us to encourage users to decrease their carbon footprint to earn badges and compete with friends. The Scanner page lets customers scan the barcode of products to check the carbon footprint before they buy. Our inbox feature lets you communicate with your friends.

How we made it We made the app using Kivy for Python. The Scanner feature is an iOS compatible feature.

Accomplishments We're super proud of our Barcode Scanner and how far we've come as developers. We started this project with no knowledge of Kivy's existence, let alone how to code in it!

What's next... Looking ahead we want to work on building the Challenges page to let users earn badges. Then we want to build our database of the carbon emissions of products. We also hope to include features where the app will give you choices of ways to offset your carbon footprint, by getting you in touch with local projects or by donating to tree planting initiatives!
