Inspiration

We were inspired by the classic, endlessly enjoyable arcade racing games of the past and the clean aesthetic of modern minimalist design. We wanted to create a game that was instantly accessible, offering a pure shot of adrenaline without long loading times or complex tutorials. The main goal was to build a fun, competitive, and interactive experience directly within a Reddit community, giving users a new way to engage with each other through gameplay.

What it does

Car Dash is a fast-paced arcade racing game built as a Reddit App. Players jump into the driver's seat and navigate down an endless road, with the simple objective of achieving the highest score possible. The game features a clean, third-person perspective, intuitive controls, and a real-time speedometer to track your speed. The core of the experience is competition; after each run, players can see how they stack up against others on a community-wide leaderboard, encouraging them to come back and beat their personal best.

How we built it

The application is built on Reddit's native app platform, Devvit, using TypeScript for the backend logic. This allowed us to handle user data, manage game state, and implement the leaderboard functionality seamlessly within the Reddit ecosystem.

The entire front-end, from the start screen to the in-game UI and the gameplay itself, is built with React. We used React's component-based architecture to create the different elements like the car, the scrolling road, the scenery, and the speedometer. The game loop and animations are managed using requestAnimationFrame within React hooks (useEffect, useState) to ensure smooth, high-performance rendering and responsive controls.

Challenges we ran into

One of the primary challenges was creating a smooth and performant game loop within the React framework. Maintaining a consistent frame rate to give the feeling of high speed was a priority and required careful state management and optimization. Another challenge was architecting the leaderboard on the Devvit backend. We had to ensure that score submissions were secure to prevent cheating and that the data could be fetched and displayed efficiently for all users. Finally, refining the "feel" of the car's movement to be responsive yet controllable took significant iteration.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are incredibly proud of successfully building a complete, playable game experience entirely within the Devvit platform. Achieving a smooth, fluid driving feel using web technologies like React is a major accomplishment for us. We are also very happy with the game's cohesive visual identity—the contrast between the moody, realistic promo art and the clean, vibrant in-game graphics creates a strong and appealing brand. Most of all, we're proud to have built a fun game with a fully functional online leaderboard, laying the groundwork for a truly competitive community experience on Reddit.

What we learned

This project was a fantastic learning experience. We gained deep, practical knowledge of the Devvit platform and its capabilities for creating rich, interactive applications on Reddit. We also honed our skills in game development with React, learning advanced techniques for managing real-time state, handling continuous user input, and optimizing component rendering for game performance. This project solidified our understanding of client-server communication in a modern app development context.

What's next for Car Dash

The current version of Car Dash is just the beginning! We have a roadmap of exciting features we plan to add:

  • Obstacles and Power-ups: Introducing on-road challenges to avoid and special items like speed boosts or shields to collect.
  • Car Customization: Allowing players to unlock and choose from a variety of cars with different looks and handling.
  • New Environments: Designing new tracks with unique visual themes, such as a neon-lit city at night or a winding desert road.
  • Sound Design: Adding engine sounds, background music, and UI sound effects to enhance immersion.
  • Deeper Reddit Integration: Exploring features like awarding top players with special user flairs or creating automated weekly tournament threads.
