Inspiration
Everyone who drives knows the struggle of trying to determine when their car needs routine maintenance done. That's why we made the Car Calculator!
What it does
The Car Calculator uses the user's input on the brand of car, the current millage, and the millage of the car when three maintenance activities were performed on the car. These are an oil change, tire rotation, and brake pad replacement. The website then uses the submitted data and the data found on that particular brand of car to determine the next time your car needs that maintenance done.
How we built it
We built our website using JavaScript and HTML.
Challenges we ran into
One of the challenges we ran into was determining how long a repair would need to be done in months. Miles are easy, but months require conversion! However through Marc's coding ability and sheer determination. the website now does this feature flawlessly. Another challenge we faced was squashing those bugs! Through the process, we faced them head-on and have a completed product, mostly bug-free!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We made a functional website in less than twenty-four hours! That is certainly something to be proud of. We also made a product that could make the roads a safer place. If your brake pads need to be replaced, wouldn't you find out now rather than on the precipice of an accident? This gives car owners the knowledge they need to keep themselves and others around them safe.
What we learned
We learned that many car breaks need to be replaced around the same time and that synthetic oil is definitely worth the extra cost! But that is not the only thing we learned. Through the whole ProfHacks experience, we learned the importance of working as a team within an extremely limited time frame.
What's next for Car Calculator
We would love to make Car Calculator have a wider variety of car brands in addition to branching out into specific cars (make, model, and year) so that everyone can have the most accurate data possible. Another possible update is expanding the number of services that it predicts for your car.
