Language Barriers & Us

  • We both come from immigrant families and despite knowing the language, we still have trouble conveying certain emotions and feelings that we have when it comes our multicultural upbringing; to being a hyphenated American where have two identities and we aren’t exactly able to fit in with one sole identity
  • Slowly, it becomes more of a challenge and a struggle for us to continue our relationship and we might even feel like we want to break away from that “other side” of our cultural identity
  • But what about our parents, our families and other families that also find it difficult to maintain relationships with their own kids and the struggle that comes with a language barrier?

What Makes Us Different?

  • We thought of a way to bridge that language barrier, especially when it comes to conveying simple or complicated phrases that are commonly used and expand it to even capturing regional variants and nuances within a specific language (Yue Chinese v.s Xiang Chinese)
  • We started off with a Spanish to English translation, but plan on refining this to become a website with a database behind it to house the phrases/words
  • This would increase the diversity that we have and acknowledge cultural difference in the “same” branch of a language (Chilean Spanish v.s Mexican Spanish)

Target Demographic

  • Immigrants assimilating to a new country/culture
  • International travellers going to a similar country, but have a different dialect of the same native language that they’re speaking (British English vs American English)
