Capture the Flag: Community Gaming Platform
Project Overview
This project addresses a gap in online gaming where most competitive games require complex setups, downloads, or accounts that create barriers to instant participation. The solution is a web-based capture the flag game that works both as a Reddit community integration and a standalone global game.
Technical Architecture
The system uses a dual-platform design where one backend serves both Reddit integrations and standalone web experiences. The architecture consists of:
- Reddit App (Devvit): Native Reddit integration for community games
- Standalone Web Game: Global game accessible at /captureflag
- Shared Backend (Express): Handles all game logic and data
- Redis Database: Stores game state and includes URL shortening service

Core Game Mechanics
The game implements a simple but engaging loop:
- Flag Capture: Players capture and hold a virtual flag
- Time-Based Scoring: Earn 1 point per second while holding the flag
- Cooldown System: 30-minute cooldown after losing prevents spam
- Real-Time Updates: Live leaderboard and flag status updates
Key Technical Solutions
Real-Time Without WebSockets
Since Reddit's Devvit platform doesn't support WebSockets, the system achieves real-time functionality through intelligent polling with client-side interpolation:
- Server updates every 10 seconds
- Client interpolates time every second
- Creates seamless real-time experience without infrastructure complexity
Dual Game Architecture
The system runs completely isolated game instances:
- Subreddit games: Private community competition using
ctf_subreddit_{name} - Global game: Open worldwide competition using
ctf_global - Independent leaderboards and scoring systems
Built-In Growth Features
Social Integration
Viral mechanics are built into gameplay:
- Flag theft triggers friend invitation prompts
- One-click sharing to Reddit, Twitter, Discord
- Platform-specific formatting for optimal engagement
Implementation Details
Context-Aware API Design
Single API endpoints intelligently route to different game instances:
// Same endpoint, different games based on context
GET /api/status → subreddit game (when called from Reddit)
GET /captureflag/api/status → global game (when called from web)
Real-Time Score Updates
const updateHolderTime = (gameState) => {
const now = Date.now();
const additionalTime = Math.floor((now - gameState.lastUpdate) / 1000);
gameState.totalHoldTime += additionalTime;
gameState.lastUpdate = now;
};
Frontend Real-Time Updates
// Polling-Based Real-Time Updates
useEffect(() => {
const updateTime = () => {
const elapsed = Math.floor((Date.now() - gameState.lastUpdate) / 1000);
setCurrentTime(gameState.totalHoldTime + elapsed);
};
const interval = setInterval(updateTime, 1000);
return () => clearInterval(interval);
}, [gameState]);
Major Challenges and Solutions
Challenge 1: Data Persistence Across Deployments
Problem: Game data was resetting every time the Reddit app was redeployed.
Solution: Implemented stable game IDs based on subreddit names instead of post IDs, ensuring data persists across multiple posts and deployments.
Challenge 2: Real-Time Updates Without WebSockets
Problem: Reddit's Devvit platform doesn't support WebSockets for real-time communication.
Solution: Created an intelligent polling system with client-side time interpolation that provides seamless real-time experience without WebSocket complexity.
Challenge 3: Dual Platform Architecture
Problem: Needed the same game to work both as a Reddit app and standalone web game.
Solution: Built a flexible backend that serves different frontends with shared API endpoints and context-aware game ID resolution.
Challenge 4: Viral Growth Mechanics
Problem: Games need built-in sharing to grow organically.
Solution: Integrated viral mechanics directly into gameplay with flag theft triggering friend invitations and built-in professional sharing links.
Technical Innovations
Stable Game ID System
Approach to data persistence in serverless environments:
- Traditional:
game_post_abc123(ephemeral) - This solution:
game_subreddit_gaming(persistent)
URL Shortener Implementation
// Production-Ready URL Shortening
const generateShortCode = () => {
const chars = 'abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ0123456789';
return Array.from({length: 6}, () =>
chars.charAt(Math.floor(Math.random() * chars.length))
).join('');
};
Results and Impact
Technical Achievements
- Zero-downtime deployments with persistent data across updates
- Multi-platform support from a single codebase
- Real-time gaming without WebSocket infrastructure
- Built-in analytics and URL shortening service
User Experience
- No signup required for the global game - players just enter their name
- Native Reddit integration that enhances community experiences
- Mobile-responsive design that works across all devices
- Instant access with no downloads or complex setup
Platform Innovation
- Reddit Integration: Native app that enhances community experience
- Dual Architecture: Same codebase serves multiple platforms
- Scalable Design: Architecture supports unlimited game instances
- Analytics Ready: Built-in tracking for growth and engagement metrics
Future Possibilities
This project demonstrates how simple concepts can create compelling experiences through solid technical execution. The dual-platform architecture opens possibilities for:
- Tournament Systems: Scheduled competitions with prizes
- Advanced Analytics: Deep insights into player behavior and engagement
- Platform Expansion: Discord, Slack, and other community integrations
- Monetization: Premium features and sponsored competitions
The system proves that one codebase can effectively serve multiple platforms while maintaining clean separation of concerns and providing the foundation for scalable community gaming experiences.
