What it does
Explore the world around you in new ways by writing and viewing location based posts uploaded by other users in an interactive web app.
As we move about our daily lives commuting through the city, it's so easy to focus inward, checking our media or listening to some music to pass the time. There's so much to see and experience in a city like Munich that we miss amidst our busy schedules and many distractions.
We came up with an app that inspires people to focus outwards, taking just a few moments to make a quick note of something remarkable that they experience in their daily lives at a specific location. Users can post anything from an a short historical fact to a riddle designed to lead others onto an adventure.
Upon visiting the site, users see their current location as coordinates in the top pane. Below is a list displaying posts from other users that were uploaded within a 50m radius. If there are no posts for the immediate area, the app will find the nearest one and point you in the right direction (head north!). Displayed posts will dynamically update as you move around. There's also an option to create new posts by inputting a title, content, and (optional) username.
How we built it
This app is build with Django in the backend and a REST API to communicate with the ReactJS frontend.
Challenges we ran into
- CORS cross origin got in the way of Djengo POST requests
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Creating a dynamic GPS locator that tracks position in real time
- Writing a full stack app front to end in 36 hours with a completely new team of people
- Creating a fully functional backend in Django connected to a centralized database
What we learned
We learned how to work with dynamically updating GPS in a react app, and what it takes to streamline app design, implementation, and deployment in a very short timeframe
What's next for Capture the City
- Sorting out spam posts/identifying popular posts with NLP or ML
- Bonus/points system for popular and regular posts
- Unlock more posts by finding keys (scavenger hunt style)
- Tabs for different categories (ex.: useful, historical, puzzles/riddles)
- Login (optional): post with a unique user handle
- UI update: Posts displayed as movable bubbles for a more fun and relaxed UX
