Inspiration
We wanted to build a game that gets people out of the house and gives people a sense of adventure. The game is very similar to pokemon go.
What it does
Captains Quest uses the users location to determine whether or not they are at a location (treasure chest, etc). Users can spend time visiting locations to gain coins, treasure, etc.
How I built it
We used android studio to create an android app. Google cloud was used to access the google-maps api to use users locations and have access to the map.
Challenges I ran into
We had a lot of bother trying to get the permissions to access users locations to work. We also had problems when trying to place the items (treasure chest, etc) in the correct places. We struggled to implement the APIfunctionality as well.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
This was the first time either of us has worked on an android app first hand, we are very proud of creating an application. This app is also written in Kotlin which neither of us had past experience with. We are also proud of getting the map working with treasure chests and other items.
What I learned
We learned how to use Kotlin which was a bit of a learning curve but rewarding. We also learned a lot about how an android application fits together and how to use google maps API.
What's next for CaptainsQuest
We would like to add more locations, as well as implementing the daily quests and more interesting graphics for when the user reaches the location.
