Ahoy, Me Hearties!

Ever wanted to engage in pirate speak? Or feel the thrill of walking the plank? Captain Scallywag is a Discord Bot and the main character of the web game: Captain Scallywag and the Trash Pearl.

How we built it

  • The discord bot was made using python (discord-py). The pirate command works by using a dictionary of common English words with their pirate translations. Words for Walk the plank was imported from the RandomWords library.

  • The site was made using reactjs and threejs and is hosted using Netlify. Our front-end master @JapneetSingh created the beautiful UI you see.

  • The backend is hosted using heroku, and uses MongoDB to manage the questions and the leaderboard.

What we learned

  1. Hackathons are pretty fun! More than half of us are first time hackers, and you won't believe the number of noob questions we had. We quickly caught on though, hurrah!
  2. We learnt to work together as a team. It was rough at first with the varying time zones and everyone ghosting. However, we managed to patch the merry band towards the end!
  3. Do NOT forget to disable CORS. Especially if you're hosting your front and back-ends on different servers. Yes, I'm being serious.

What's next for Captain Scallywag

This is certainly not the end! Captain Scallywag will continue to sail the seven seas! More features, quizzes, who knows?
