Inspiration

Capsule AI was inspired by family nature adventures in Bøtø, Denmark. We wanted a fun way to discover butterflies, plants, insects, and wildlife together instead of simply taking photos and forgetting them. What started as a simple AI-powered field book quickly evolved into a bigger idea: experiences have a beginning, a purpose, and an end, but most software is designed to last forever.

We asked ourselves: What if vacations, school trips, events, and expeditions had their own temporary digital space? From that question, Capsule AI was born.

What it does

Capsule AI creates temporary AI-powered experiences called Capsules.

Participants join a capsule and contribute discoveries, photos, videos, observations, and memories. AI enriches the experience by identifying species, generating facts, tracking progress, awarding achievements, and creating summaries.

When the experience ends, Capsule AI generates a final downloadable memory package containing media, statistics, highlights, and AI-generated stories. The capsule can then automatically expire and delete its cloud data.

How we built it

We built Capsule AI as a mobile-first web application designed for real-world use.

Technology stack:

  • HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Cloud Run deployment
  • Cloud database and object storage
  • AI services for identification, summaries, and content generation
  • Responsive mobile design

We used AI-assisted development to rapidly prototype ideas, refine workflows, and iterate on user experience. The original proof of concept focused on a butterfly spotting challenge, which helped validate engagement, gamification, and collaborative discovery.

Challenges we ran into

  • Expanding the concept beyond a nature app without losing simplicity.
  • Designing a platform flexible enough for vacations, events, expeditions, and challenges.
  • Balancing competition and collaboration through leaderboards and achievements.
  • Managing AI-generated content while keeping future costs predictable.
  • Creating a meaningful end-of-life experience through exports and deletion.
  • Building privacy-first workflows that align with modern data protection expectations.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a real working application used during actual family adventures.
  • Turned nature discovery into a collaborative game instead of a data-entry exercise.
  • Created an experience that encourages participants to look away from screens and engage with the world around them.
  • Developed a reusable capsule model that can apply to many different event types.
  • Demonstrated how AI can enrich experiences rather than simply answer questions.
  • Designed a platform where the final deliverable belongs entirely to the participants.

What we learned

We learned that people connect more deeply when they have a shared goal and a shared story.

We also learned that AI's greatest value is often not generating content from scratch, but helping organize and enrich real experiences. The most engaging parts of the platform were not technical features, but the moments when participants discovered something together, earned achievements, and contributed to a larger story.

Most importantly, we learned that not every digital experience needs to last forever.

Project Update #1

Capsule AI started as a family nature discovery app used during real adventures in Bøtø, Denmark. During the hackathon we're evolving that concept into a broader platform for temporary AI-powered experiences.

Our goal is to create "Capsules" that bring people together around a shared activity such as a vacation, nature challenge, school trip, festival, or expedition.

Current work includes:

  • Building a generalized Capsule model
  • Designing participant leaderboards and achievements
  • Creating AI-powered summaries and storytelling
  • Developing end-of-event memory packages
  • Exploring privacy-first workflows with automatic expiration and data deletion

One insight we've discovered during the hackathon is that the real value isn't just identifying species or organizing photos. It's helping groups create shared stories around real-world experiences.

We're currently rebuilding the original concept using ChatGPT and Codex-assisted development and expanding it into a flexible framework that can support many different kinds of adventures.
