Inspiration
Our inspiration stemmed from a clear and pressing need we observed within our own community: university students and young adults. We saw a significant gap in practical, accessible financial education, leaving many of our peers navigating complex financial decisions—from budgeting to student loans to saving—with little to no guidance. Our core motivation was to create a tool that could demystify finance, making it engaging, personalized, and actionable. We wanted to build more than just another app; we wanted to provide a tangible solution that could empower young people, help them build healthy, sustainable financial habits, and ultimately have a lasting, positive impact on their economic futures.
What it does
CapitalU is a personalized financial literacy platform that transforms a user's raw banking data into a customized educational journey.
The user's experience begins by securely logging in with their Capital One account and granting permission for the app to analyze their basic transaction categories. With a single tap, the app conducts a comprehensive analysis of their account history to establish an initial financial profile.
Once this baseline is set, the app's core feature, the Route Generator, designs a unique learning path tailored to the user's specific financial habits, strengths, and weaknesses. This path is composed of two main types of modules:
Micro-lessons: These are brief, digestible lessons with clear examples, followed by a short 2-3 question quiz to confirm understanding and "pass" the module.
Actions: These are practical, real-world tasks that require the user to apply the knowledge they've just learned, such as setting a specific budget or reviewing a subscription.
Progress is visually tracked at every step. The main Progress Panel provides a high-level dashboard showing streaks, a calendar of completed days, and overall progress bars. At a modular level, a clear color-coded system shows which modules are complete, in-progress, or not yet started.
Beyond the learning path, the app features a dedicated "MyFinancialProfile" section, which serves as a central hub for all the insights and analysis generated by the app. A key utility here is the Purchase Advisor. A user can input a potential purchase, and the system—analyzing their income, expenses, and typical spending habits—provides a simple positive, neutral, or negative recommendation to help guide them toward smarter spending decisions in real-time.
How we built it
Our development process was grounded in thorough research, which evolved into a comprehensive case study to deeply understand our target users and the specific financial challenges they face.
Based on our findings, we engineered the solution using a modern tech stack. We chose Swift to build a high-performance, responsive, and secure native iOS application, ensuring a seamless user experience. For the intelligent features, we leveraged LangChain to orchestrate the complex logic required for analyzing financial data, generating the personalized learning paths from our content, and powering the sophisticated recommendations of our 'Purchase Advisor' feature.
Challenges we ran into
Our primary challenge was narrowing the scope of such a broad problem. "Financial literacy" is a massive topic. The first hurdle was to move from a general idea to a specific, high-impact "problematic" that we could realistically solve.
The second significant challenge was integrating current, advanced technologies in a way that was truly meaningful. It wasn't just about using a tool like LangChain, but applying it effectively to generate a learning path that felt genuinely personalized and more effective than a one-size-fits-all solution. We iterated multiple times on the logic to ensure the AI-generated "route" provided tangible value.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are exceptionally proud of the depth of our initial research and the "problematic" we defined. We didn't just jump into coding; we took the time to conduct a detailed case study and truly empathize with our target audience.
Our biggest accomplishment was pinpointing that core gap: the disconnect between abstract financial knowledge and practical, daily action. Defining this problem with such clarity became the guiding star for the entire project. This allowed usa to build a solution with a focused, tangible purpose and avoid the trap of simply creating another generic finance app.
What we learned
This project was a significant learning experience on multiple fronts. On the technical side, we deepened our skills in native iOS development with Swift and gained hands-on experience in the practical application of LLM-orchestration tools like LangChain to solve a real-world problem.
On the collaborative side, we learned how to effectively integrate different skill sets—research, design, and backend engineering—into a single, cohesive workflow. Most profoundly, we gained invaluable insight into the financial realities for young adults in Mexico. Our research exposed the common spending patterns, the specific knowledge gaps, and the systemic anxiety surrounding money that hinders financial well-being for this demographic.
What's next for CapitalU
Our vision for CapitalU extends far beyond this initial prototype. The immediate next step is to launch a pilot program, deploying the app to a closed beta group of real Capital One customers. This will be critical for gathering qualitative feedback, validating our assumptions with quantitative data, and measuring its real-world performance.
Based on the feedback from this pilot, our long-term roadmap includes:
Expanding the capabilities to include modules on investing, credit building, and debt management.
Enhancing the sophistication of the AI advisor.
Developing a strategy for a wider rollout to all young adult customers.
