In today's digital age, especially in 2023, the younger generation seeks engagement, immediacy, and interactivity in almost every aspect of their lives. Banking, traditionally seen as staid and uninspiring, required a revamp. We envisioned a platform where financial responsibility becomes not just a necessity but a rewarding experience. This led us to the creation of Capital Coin, where financial literacy meets gamification. What It Does: The user embarks on their journey of financial literacy and responsibility. Through a series of tiered objectives, users progress from Bronze to Diamond levels, reflecting their growing understanding and consistency in financial management. As users navigate and complete these objectives, they're awarded a virtual currency known as 'Capital Coin'. This currency isn't just a digital badge of honour; it holds tangible value and can be redeemed for real-world rewards, discounts, and experiences with Capital One. How It Was Built: The project's core lies in its integration with Capital One's API, allowing us to fetch real-time transactional data. The backend, powered by Express, handles the intricate logic, mediating between the dynamic front and the API. For the frontend, we harnessed the capabilities of Next.js combined with React, ensuring a swift, interactive, and user-friendly interface. Challenges: Our journey wasn't without its hurdles. As the project grew, managing directories and ensuring an organized codebase became complex. Displaying dynamic charts that shifted with real-time data was another significant challenge. Furthermore, harmonizing the coding styles of a diverse team and ensuring code consistency was a mountain we had to scale. Accomplishments: Despite the challenges, we proudly integrated Capital One's API seamlessly, transforming raw financial data into engaging, gamified experiences. Another major win was our team's adaptability. Many members dived into unfamiliar territories, learning new languages and technologies on the go, yet delivering quality and efficiency in the final product. What We Learned: Beyond the technical skills and proficiency in new tools, the project taught us the importance of collaboration, adaptability, and effective communication. We learned that challenges, when approached with collective determination, turn into opportunities for innovation. What's Next for Capital Coin: As the digital landscape evolves, so will the potential of Capital Coin. We envision expanding the reward catalog, introducing more intricate objectives and even integrating with other platforms or merchants, allowing users to spend their Capital Coins in a broader marketplace.
