Inspiration

Growing up, I never really learned financial literacy early on. Things like saving, investing, and managing money were learned late and mostly through trial and error. I believe giving kids early exposure in a safe environment can help them build confidence and better habits, while allowing parents to stay involved and guide the process.

What it does

Capital Two is a financial literacy platform where kids use simulated money to invest, save, and learn budgeting skills. Parents have access to a real time dashboard where they can monitor activity, lock or unlock features, set allowances, and track their child’s financial literacy progress through reports and scores.

How we built it

The platform was built using a modern web stack focused on performance, scalability, and clean UI design.

Tech Stack

  • Next.js 16 (App Router) for the frontend framework
  • React 19 for building interactive UI
  • TypeScript for type safety and maintainability
  • Tailwind CSS v4 for styling
  • Zustand for lightweight state management
  • Recharts for portfolio and savings visualizations
  • shadcn/ui for reusable UI components
  • Lucide React for icons

Challenges we ran into

One major challenge was designing the platform so it felt realistic without encouraging gambling behavior. Balancing freedom for kids with meaningful parental oversight was also difficult, especially when deciding what actions should be locked or monitored.

Another challenge was designing financial literacy scoring in a way that rewards good habits rather than short term profit.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Building a fully functional parent and child dashboard system
  • Designing a behavior based financial literacy scoring model
  • Creating personalized AI driven feedback for kids
  • Making the platform educational without feeling restrictive
  • Delivering a clean, modern UI that feels approachable

What we learned

We learned how important clarity and transparency are when designing financial tools, especially for younger users. We also gained experience building scalable state management, designing meaningful metrics, and translating real world financial concepts into simple, understandable features.

What's next for Capital Two

Next steps include adding deeper budgeting tools, long term goal planning, more detailed reports for parents, and expanded AI guidance tailored to age and experience level. We also plan to introduce educational challenges and lessons to further reinforce financial concepts.
