Inspiration
My parents are one of the main inspirations because we are an immigrant family and my dad taught himself most of the financial knowledge he has. In general, the inspiration for Roots came from recognizing the significant gap in financial literacy, especially among lower-income and immigrant communities. Many adults have not had access to formal financial education, which creates barriers to managing their finances and building wealth. We wanted to create a tool that provides not only financial knowledge but also a supportive community where users can learn together. Roots is inspired by the idea that financial literacy should be a right, not a privilege, and that it can become a legacy passed down through generations.
What it does
Roots is a mobile app that empowers users to take control of their finances through budgeting tools, goal tracking, educational resources, and community support. The app features an intuitive dashboard for at-a-glance financial health, a smart budgeting system to categorize and track expenses, and customizable goal-setting for milestones like buying a house or saving for an emergency fund. Additionally, Roots offers leveled learning modules and interactive quizzes to help users improve their financial knowledge. The community section fosters peer support, while an AI assistant is available to answer questions and provide personalized guidance. Roots is designed to make financial literacy accessible, engaging, and culturally relevant.
How we built it
We built Roots with user-centered design principles to ensure a seamless, intuitive experience. The core functionality, such as budgeting, goal tracking, and the learning modules, is mocked up with Canva organized around a simple and visually appealing dashboard that users can navigate with ease. The community aspect was designed with a forum-style layout to enable discussions and exchanges of advice. For the backend, we would plan to use a cloud-based database to store user data securely and allow real-time updates for features like budgeting and goal progress.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge was time limitations, with all the projects, we could not implement the frontend or backend for the proposed application, therefore we tried our best with the UI interface mockup design.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud to have thought of a platform that goes beyond standard financial tools by addressing the educational and emotional aspects of financial growth. Roots stands out for its inclusive approach, catering to those who have historically lacked access to financial literacy resources. We’re also proud of the visual design and functionality of the dashboard and the innovative integration of a supportive community environment. These accomplishments reflect our commitment to building a user-friendly and impactful app that truly meets the needs of its target audience.
What we learned
Throughout this project, we learned how critical it is to simplify UI/UX design. Balancing the different elements taught us valuable lessons in user-centered design.
What's next for Capital One UI/UX Design
Looking ahead, we would plan to further develop Roots by implementing the frontend and backend, as well as creating its proposed AI capabilities for even more personalized guidance, adding more advanced learning modules, and implementing real-time spending analytics. We envision partnering with financial educators and institutions to expand the educational content and provide scholarships for premium features. If we continue to grow Roots, we would be committed to refining its interface based on user feedback, making financial literacy a more accessible and empowering experience for all.
