Inspiration
As current Capital One customers and college students who strive to regulate our finances, we wanted to design the basic core UI/UX of a mobile app that could allow members of our demographic to manage our subscriptions-- a major, yet tedious part of college finances). We invite you to take a peak at Capital One Subscription Manager.
What it does
Through API technology, the Capital One Subscription Manager allows you to collectively view all your subscriptions in one mobile app! Information of your subscriptions can be viewed right through the app as each subscription has its own pane. You have the option to link more apps to your account through your mobile phone as well as the option to cancel any subscription through the app. Not sure if you should cancel a subscription? No worries. Subscription Manager will track your user activity on the apps and notify you if you haven't used an app in over three months. Additionally, you can view the last use of the app yourself as well as check your spend analyzer to understand the cost of a single subscription as a portion of your total costs. All this information empowers you to better understand the where your money is going. What's more? Capital One has direct partnerships with many streaming platform favorites. When you subscribe with them directly through the Subscription Manager app, you can take advantage of promotions and rewards exclusive to Capital One customers. And as you continue to use and pay for subscriptions through the app, you can accumulate rewards credits, in which you can be eligible to use your rewards credits to pay for your subscription bills!
How we built it
Our interface and UI was built using Figma, a collaborative web application for interface design. We used many tools and practices to really make our project come to life, such as (but not limited to) animations to smoothly transition from screen to screen, established typography guidelines to carefully select and implement font pairings and logo text for the UI, and a consistent color scheme all around just to name a few methods used. A user friendly UI was the main priority, and as such we made it so the home screen would contain only the minimal amount of information the customer would need about their subscriptions and some rewards bonuses as a plus so that it would be simple to navigate, while also having crucial information available at a moments notice if the customer chooses to click on any of the panes regarding a certain subscription.
Challenges we ran into
Most of the issues we ran into were trivial, however a lingering one that was the source of many of our troubles came specifically from some of the animations and transitions we wanted to add for presentational purposes. We had many issues regarding a certain button that should have taken us to another screen but did not do so, and some other issues with accidental transitions that were never intentional to keep, and weren't spotted until late in the development stage.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the way were able to create a very user friendly home screen as well as implementing the simple, yet important aspect of Face ID login. We are also proud of how we were able to come up with the idea of the spend analyzer to better help customers understand how their expenses add up as well as the other features that allowed us to innovate several possible use cases within the app. We are also proud of coming up with the rewards and partnerships idea as this adds a stream of revenue for Capital One through partnerships with other companies.
What we learned
We as a group learned a lot about what it takes to make a user interface that can be sophisticated in some of the minor, more unnoticeable details were they are needed, while also making it simple to understand with not much in the way i the form of clutter so that anyone can use the app and understand what each part of the app does.
What's next for Capital One Subscription Manager
What's next is working on perfecting the existing features while coming up with new ones, especially those that may add streams of revenue to Capital One as well as enhancing the user journey. I would particularly love to improve the spend analyzer.
