Inspiration

The inspiration behind Capital Insights stems from the need for a data-driven approach in real estate and business decision-making. Recognizing the challenges investors and businesses face in selecting optimal locations, we aimed to create a tool that provides valuable insights for informed choices.

What it does

Capital Insights revolutionizes location analysis. By inputting a retail property address, users gain access to key metrics such as relative property price, foot traffic data, probabilistic parking data, and a comprehensive property-rating algorithm. This information is crucial for both investors seeking profitable ventures and businesses planning strategic expansions.

How we built it

We built Capital Insights using Node.js to request authentication tokens, access the INRIX API, convert geographical coordinates using Open Cage Data API, and develop a sophisticated algorithm to evaluate properties. We used Puppeteer to scrape price and square footage data from retail listings online. Lastly, we implemented Vue.js to tie everything neatly and compactly for the end user. Leveraging geospatial data and market trends, we developed a robust system that processes input addresses and delivers actionable insights.

Challenges we ran into

Challenges included scraping the retail listings in a reliable and efficient manner. Listings were inconsistently formatted and we needed to adapt to those edge cases. Another challenge was reliably evaluating properties. Did marginally more expensive properties warrant a significantly lower rating? How did every factor fit into the overall rating? Overall, we challenged ourselves by using frameworks and workflows with which we had no prior experience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We take pride in successfully creating a user-friendly platform that transforms complex data into easily understandable insights. Our accomplishment lies in developing a tool that empowers both investors and businesses to make strategic decisions confidently.

What we learned

Through the development of Capital Insights, we gained valuable insights into the full-stack development process, idea-to-product execution, and collaboration. We adapted to new frameworks, languages, and sorted through completely new API documentation. Overall, we learned to adapt to our environment and identify important patterns in software to intelligently and elegantly construct our application.

What's next for Capital Insights

The journey doesn't end here. We plan to enhance Capital Insights by incorporating more historical data so that we can analyze trends in property prices and traffic data, and draw conclusions about what this data means for the future. We would love to compile as much data as we can to create the most sophisticated algorithm possible.
