Inspiration

recently, one of our members caught up with a friend who had recently started a full time job. we were surprised to find that one of their biggest struggles in starting a 9 to 5 job was managing social commitments after work. often, they would overcommit to hang outs with friends and become incredibly burnt out, especially as an introvert. additionally, there was a consistent and clear mismatch between the social capacity you have when making plans, and the social capacity you're at when you arrive at said plans. with that, we decided to tackle bridging this mismatch by helping users identify their social battery capacities, empowering them to build social habits that are healthy, maintainable, and enjoyable.

Why we built it

social connection is vital for the health of both individuals and communities. according to the world health organization, strong social networks are also linked to lower inflammation, stronger emotional well-being, and prevention of serious health risks.

however, many working 9-to-5 adults today lack not only the time, but the energy & social capacity to maintain healthy social connections.

balancing schedules and social capacity with social connection is especially difficult postgrad, given hectic work schedules, feelings of burnout, and unfamiliar environments.

without a clear way of tracking their social capacities, employees may not have the ability to engage with their social networks in a healthy way. people may either:

  • neglect their social connections by self-isolating.
  • neglect their own social battery and health by over-committing to social meetups. this is linked to increased psychological distress and reduced mental health (Journal of Health Psychology (Porru et al., 2020))

these users need help managing their social battery, not just their time, in order to prevent burnout before it even occurs.

What it does

through a series of tracked and user-inputted metrics, capacity tracks a user's social battery throughout the week. it builds trends from this data in order to formulate suggestions on how to modify schedules in the coming weeks to best proportion time for self care and prevent overcommitting.

we often think of physical health as something we maintain over time. we should think about social health in the same way.

our app helps users monitor and maintain their social fitness in order to sustainably engage with others. by quantifying a user’s social battery, our tool provides early awareness of social energy levels, so that they can balance meetings, work interactions, and personal relationship before exhaustion occurs.

capacity helps users maintain the energy to stay connected, both at work and in their personal lives.
