Inspiration

Capacity Canada has the goal of helping nonprofits by providing them events and services. As owners of our own nonprofits, we want to help Capacity Canada create services that strengthen the nonprofit community. Our solution Capacity Match aims to help Capacity Canada tailor their services to nonprofits' changing needs while connecting nonprofits to these new opportunities.

What it does

Capacity Match identifies patterns across conversations and displays those trends on a dashboard, helping Capacity Canada see what organizations are struggling with and plan workshops and events around real needs. It will notify organizations about services and events that fit their needs.

How we built it

We built Capacity Match using TigerData, the Gemini API, and ElevenLabs. We developed a personalized AI chatbot using custom instructions to understand each nonprofit's unique needs, challenges, and services. We integrated voice-to-text capabilities to make sharing information easier and multilingual communication more accessible. The information collected through conversations is organized into organizational profiles and used to generate analytics dashboards for Capacity Canada. These dashboards highlight recurring challenges, gaps in support, and areas of need across organizations, helping Capacity Canada identify where to focus resources, develop relevant workshops and events, and notify nonprofits about services and opportunities that could help them.

Challenges we ran into

One of our main challenges was getting all the features to work together, especially the conversational AI and voice-to-text. We had to figure out how to make the chatbot understand the information nonprofits shared, remember their specific needs, and give recommendations that were actually relevant and practical. Another challenge was making the matching system look beyond similar organizations and identify those that could provide services another nonprofit was missing. We also had to ensure the generated outreach emails used the right information from both organizations so they felt personalized, not generic.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of building our first hackathon project into a working platform with multiple integrated features. From developing a personalized AI chatbot and voice-to-text capabilities to creating analytics dashboards for Capacity Canada, we learned how to bring a complex idea to life as a team. Most importantly, we're proud that we're building something that could help nonprofits access the support, resources, and connections they need to make a greater impact.

What we learned

Communihacks was for some members of our group, our first hackathon experience. We learned that finishing a hackathon is more than just coding. Throughout our hackathon experience, we learned to manage conflicts with each other and received valuable feedback from mentors. For the future, we plan to assign roles beforehand and do more planning as opposed to jumping directly to coding.

What's next for Capacity Match

Our next step is to help nonprofits actually receive the support and resources they need. Many organizations have limited time, funding, and capacity, so we want Capacity Match to make it easier for them to discover available services, share resources, and connect directly with other nonprofits. We also want to help Capacity Canada use the insights gathered through the platform to address gaps in support, create relevant opportunities, and strengthen collaboration across the nonprofit sector.
