Project Goal
As part of the Ideation Track for the ELC Accessible Beauty Hackathon, our team ideated an accessibility-maximizing canvas experience of makeup try-on called CanvUs.
Project Methodology
Our team took a Design Thinking approach to ideate for this experience. We conducted the first three steps in Design Thinking: 1. Empathize, 2. Define, 3. Ideate.
Inspiration
We drew inspiration from our user interviews with disability artist Kam Redlawsk and disability fashion influencer Samantha Jade Durán. Our interviewees identified the following design opportunities:
- In-store mirrors are too tall to reach for people in wheelchairs.
- Current VR try-ons are too "Glam" for many people, they do not offer customization features.
- There is a lack of social media representation of people with disability in the beauty industry.
Feature Ideation
Accessibility & Inclusion
- Sketch-your-style feature: Engage users in customizing their try-on.
- Touch- & Voice-enabled: Integrate existing voice-enabled technologies within the app.
- Color precision & Augment Enhancement: For people with low-vision.
Connect Experiences
- Social sharing: Enable sharing of try-on picture or virtual GRWM videos.
- Physical purchase: Connect to product purchases.
- In-store experience: Inform users about wheelchair-friendly experiences.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Conducted extensive secondary research & competitor analysis on existing inclusive technology, and specifically VR makeup try-on tools.
- Interviewed two disability advocates and listened to their stories.
What we learned
- People with disability needs more representation in the beauty industry.
- A lot of current try-on tools focus only on trying on the product, yet lack precision and customization, leading to less user engagement.
- Defining end-to-end experiences for VR try-on tools is important for a product's success.
