Inspiration

Across Africa, many people want to save and invest but face fragmented financial services, limited financial knowledge, and barriers to accessing digital financial tools. We were inspired to build a platform that connects saving, investing, and financial education while remaining accessible to both smartphone and feature-phone users.

What it does

Canopy is an inclusive financial platform that helps users save, invest, and build financial awareness in one place. Users can manage their wallet, create savings goals, track investments and portfolios, receive AI-powered financial insights, and access essential services through USSD and SMS. Canopy's PWA and USSD channels share the same financial core, allowing users to interact with their finances regardless of the device they use.

How we built it

We built Canopy as a full-stack PWA with a shared financial backend powering the wallet, double-entry ledger, savings, transactions, investment simulation, portfolio analytics, and financial intelligence. We integrated OpenFIGI for instrument identification and market-data services for investment information. We also built a USSD access layer using Africa's Talking, with SMS notifications for feature-phone users. Codex was central to our development workflow, with GPT-5.6 Tuna at high effort helping us implement and extend the system incrementally across multiple development phases while maintaining the existing architecture.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was building a financial system that was more than just a UI. We had to ensure that wallet balances, savings, investments, transactions, and the 48-hour holding period were connected through a consistent financial architecture and ledger. Integrating external APIs and handling unavailable market data was another challenge. We also had to design USSD flows that work within strict session and message limitations while keeping them connected to the same backend used by smartphone users.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have evolved Canopy from an initial concept into a functional financial ecosystem with a shared financial core. We built a working wallet and transaction architecture, savings goals, a 48-hour fund holding mechanism, simulated investment and portfolio tracking, market data integration, AI financial intelligence, and USSD/SMS access. Most importantly, we created a system where a user can interact with the same financial account through both a smartphone and a feature phone.

What we learned

We learned that building a financial product requires much more than creating attractive interfaces. The underlying architecture, transaction integrity, security, and consistency of financial data are critical. We also learned that AI-assisted development works best when complex products are broken into focused, incremental phases. Using Codex with GPT-5.6 Tuna allowed us to move faster while continuously inspecting, testing, and extending the existing codebase rather than attempting to build everything in one step.

What's next for Canopy

Our next step is to move Canopy from a functional MVP toward a production-ready financial ecosystem. We plan to integrate real payment and mobile-money infrastructure, expand investment options across African markets, strengthen financial intelligence and personalization, improve USSD accessibility, and explore partnerships with financial institutions and regulated investment providers. Ultimately, we want Canopy to become a trusted financial companion that helps more Africans move from simply managing money to confidently building long-term financial security and wealth.
