We were inspired by the urgent need to make conversations around diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) more engaging, accessible, and actionable. As a team passionate about social impact and technology, we wanted to build something that could help individuals in workplaces and schools better understand how their everyday choices contribute to inclusive environments. The idea for Canadian Diversity Quest was born from this motivation: to gamify learning and make inclusion feel real through scenario-based experiences.

Canadian Diversity Quest is an interactive web app powered by AI that guides users through real-world inclusion challenges. Players make decisions in dynamic scenarios and receive real-time feedback powered by Google Gemini, helping them reflect on the impact of their choices. The app is designed to simulate workplace and community settings, fostering empathy and awareness while encouraging positive behavior change.

We built the app using React for the frontend and Flask for the backend, with Google Gemini integrated to generate responsive, context-aware feedback based on user choices. Our team collaborated through GitHub and used Figma for wireframing and UI design. We also leveraged prompt engineering techniques to align Gemini’s responses with inclusive language and learning goals.

One of the biggest challenges we faced was making AI responses both meaningful and concise. Balancing informative feedback with a smooth user experience required iterative testing and prompt tuning. We also had to scope our content carefully to fit within the time constraints of the hackathon while ensuring a clear user journey and learning objective.

We’re proud of how much we accomplished in a short time—especially integrating Google Gemini in a way that adds real educational value. Our team worked across disciplines, bringing together design, development, and DEI knowledge to create something we truly believe can make a difference. We’re also proud of the storytelling and interactive flow that makes learning feel intuitive and engaging.

Through this project, we learned the importance of clear communication when working under pressure, and how to translate inclusive principles into interactive design. We gained hands-on experience with AI integration, and learned how small design choices can make a big difference in how users experience and retain inclusive concepts.

Next, we’d like to expand Canadian Diversity Quest with more real-life stories, bilingual language support, and deeper integration with DEI frameworks. We envision the app being used in onboarding, training, or school settings, and we’re excited to explore partnerships that can help us bring it to life beyond the hackathon.
