Inspiration
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected so many lives around the world and I wanted to raise awareness about the pandemic and its impact on my home country, Canada. There are lots of data about COVID-19 on the Internet but I feel that it would be really useful to have the most important information in one user friendly place.
What it does
Canadian Covid-19 Tracker uses data made available from the Canadian government through https://health-infobase.canada.ca/covid-19/epidemiological-summary-covid-19-cases.html. It sorts them into different line graphs which the user can choose to view using 2 drop-down menus
The users can view data such as “Number of Confirmed Cases” and “Death” and data can be filtered by province or territory. In addition, by using another or by selecting “Canada” in the drop-down menu, they can see how each region compares to each other and the country itself.
How we built it
I used python to create my program and imported multiple libraries such as Plotly Dash and pandas to create a data visualization of the Canadian Covid-19 data.
The Canadian government allows access to the data, and I used that as input to the application.
Challenges we ran into
This is my first data visualization project that I’ve worked one and I’ve never used Plotly Dash before. So, there was a bit of a learning curve. Also, it took some searching to find reliable Covid-19 data from a trusted source to use.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This is my first hackathon, so I am very proud of myself for stepping out of my comfort zone to participate in it.
I am also proud that I managed to create the Canadian Covid-19 Tracker in such a short amount of time while using some tools that I never used before.
What we learned
I have acquired new knowledge that I feel would be very useful as I continue to develop my programming skills and career. I now know much more about data visualization techniques and widely used tools such as the Plotly Dash framework for python.
I also learned much about participating in Hackathons and how rewarding it can be. I feel more confident and enthusiastic about future events.
What's next for Canadian Covid-19 Tracker
I plan on expanding my program to include data from multiple countries, not just Canada.
