Inspiration

Who likes to stay home in quarantine? No one! Who likes traveling? Everyone! Canada is the second largest country and we do not have the chance to explore it anymore. So we made a project to explore and get to know our beautiful country by seeing many random street view images. It's inspired from the GeoGuesser game.

What it does

It shows a picture from Google Street view from Canada, and the user is asked to guess where that picture is in canada by placing a pin on the map. Then it returns how far off the user was from the actual location of the image.

How we built it

We used HTML & CSS for the design and used a combination of Python and Javascript for the backend scripts, putting this all together using Flask. This project also implements Google maps Javascript API.

Challenges we ran into

This is our first Hackathon, and we are first and second year students so we lacked technical knowledge. We also struggled to coordinate well with each other. We had many ideas for a project and we were very indecisive, so we changed projects multiple times, resulting a lot of time wasted.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we learned so much in 24 hours! We had to learn a lot and teach ourselves from the internet. Learning how to learn is a very important skill that needs to be acquired.

What we learned

We learned new programming languages (Python, JavaScript, etc.), new framework, Web development, using the Google Maps API. We learned a lot!

What's next for Canada StreetView Guessing Game

Making a score system, and improving the game. It would also be good to add the option to see local landmarks, from different cities, which would make people connect with locals all around the country!
