Can You See Me
Esri's Intern Yearbook App
What it does
Can You See Me is a collaborative yearbook that provides a space for interns reminisce on their summer and provide insightful feedback and advice to Esri and future cohorts. Interns simply upload photos to Can You See Me and enter an address. With the help of the ArcGIS JavaScript API, our app geocodes the location and adds photos to a community map.
Behind the scenes, our facial recognition algorithm, which is trained on user uploaded profile pictures, identifies users present in each photo and tags them. Users can then head over to the gallery tab, where they can filter the mass of photos by user, location, or date.
Although, Can You See Me is a great digital memory for our 2023 intern cohort, its data also provides insightful feedback for the Esri University Relations team and future intern cohort. Upon analyzing the metadata, our team ran a cluster analysis to reveal this intern cohort's favorite locations in Redlands and beyond -- useful information for future interns traveling to Southern California from around the world. Interns can also provide qualitative feedback via our quick Survey123.
How we built it
Can You See Me was built using Esri's ArcGIS JavaScript API, lots of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python, and SQL, and the power of friendship.
Challenges we ran into
- Rescope of initial idea due to misunderstanding of ArcGIS API capabilities
- Balancing ambitious goals with time allotted
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Our teamwork and adaptability during a pivot and idea re-development
- Our ability to build an accurate facial recognition algorithm
- Our efficiency and ability to accomplish our ambitious goals
What's next for Can You See Me
Looking to the future, our team is hoping to refine our search and filter features to further streamline the photo searching and sharing process. We are also hoping to add additional recognition features to recognize locations as a compliment to the existing geocoding process.
Can You See Me is easily reproducible for future intern cohorts. Check out our Intern Yearbook and code below!
