Inspiration

We wanted to create something that showcases the different stressors that high schoolers face across the country, and give policymakers and students alike a tool that can show what it takes to change.

What it does

It lets users pick any high school in the country (included in ODIS) data, and see their composite stress scores. The calculator will then allow users to input a target score reducer, and outputs the budget needed for that to happen. We also built an HTML webpage that has an interactive map with levers to show how updates in data affect stress scores.

How we built it

We used the Open Data Index for Schools to create school profiles and map the indicators. We added national benchmarks to guide intervention recommendations and limits, then connected the levers to program cost estimates. The interface lets users search for schools, explore the map, and adjust the plan interactively.

Challenges we ran into

We used the ODIS data to look at high schools across the country, but some of the stress scores seemed off based on how they took the weighted averages. We had to carefully examine how the data measured certain variables and fit them to our data properly.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're very proud of the interactive calculator and map, as it allows anyone to use and visualize the stressors across counties in the US.

What we learned

We learned how to build a regression model that takes in numerous variables and outputs a reliable budget expectation.

What's next for Can you fix it?

We must verify that all our calculations are according to the exact same metrics and our assumptions are reasonable. We must get feedback from our community to see how we can improve as well!
