Inspiration: College students shouldn't need a dozen different apps just to manage their education. At Boston University, students constantly switch between course catalogs, degree requirement sheets, prerequisite lists, syllabi, Gmail, Google Calendar, dining websites, transportation apps, and budgeting tools. Even something as simple as planning next semester can require searching thousands of courses while accounting for major requirements, Hub credits, prerequisites, and scheduling conflicts. This fragmented system creates unnecessary stress, particularly for first-generation students and incoming freshmen who may not have access to the same institutional knowledge as more experienced students. Missing a prerequisite, overlooking an assignment deadline, or choosing an unnecessarily expensive food delivery option can have real consequences. We wanted to answer one question: What if students had one intelligent platform that understood their academic requirements, organized their schedules, and helped them navigate everyday college life? That question inspired CampusWizard, an AI-powered college companion designed to make university life simpler, more accessible, and more affordable.
What it does: CampusWizard is an all-in-one student life platform powered by Wiz, our AI assistant built using Google Gemini. It brings together academic planning, personal scheduling, financial awareness, and campus resources into one centralized experience.
Our platform focuses on five major areas:
Intelligent Course and Degree Planning CampusWizard incorporates a database of 7,682 Boston University courses, including 3,671 with Fall 2026 sections. Students can explore courses with information about prerequisites, BU Hub requirements, professors, meeting times, and classroom locations. The platform also supports degree requirement tracking across six academic programs: Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, and Data Science. Students can use this information to plan semesters and make informed decisions about their academic progress.
AI-Powered Academic Assistance Wiz, powered by Google Gemini, helps students process academic information and organize their responsibilities. It can extract assignment deadlines and exam dates from syllabi, assist with academic planning questions, and help students manage information that would otherwise require manual organization.
Gmail and Google Calendar Integration Students can explicitly connect their Gmail and Google Calendar accounts to bring academic events and assignments into their scheduling workflow. This helps consolidate important information that would otherwise be scattered across multiple applications.
Budgeting and Food Price Comparison CampusWizard helps students monitor expenses and make smarter food decisions. We collected 24 delivery prices across eight restaurants and three delivery platforms, allowing students to compare costs rather than manually checking multiple delivery applications.
Campus Navigation and Daily Life CampusWizard incorporates location information for 33 BU buildings and residence halls, dining information for four campus dining halls, live MBTA Green Line arrival information, and National Weather Service forecasts. The platform also supports Google authentication, email/password login, and a guest demonstration mode designed to keep guest data on the user's device. By connecting these features, CampusWizard helps students spend less time navigating disconnected systems and more time focusing on their education.
How we built it: We developed CampusWizard as a full-stack web application using Next.js, React, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS, combining an interactive frontend with structured university data and external service integrations. One of our largest technical undertakings was organizing Boston University's course information. We worked with thousands of course records, section offerings, prerequisites, and degree requirements to create a structured foundation for academic planning.
We integrated several technologies and services:
- Google Gemini: Powers Wiz's AI-assisted interactions and document information extraction.
- Google OAuth: Enables Google account authentication.
- Gmail and Google Calendar APIs: Connect academic communication and scheduling workflows.
- MBTA API: Provides live public transportation information.
- National Weather Service API: Supplies weather forecasts.
Git and GitHub: Support version control and team collaboration. We also developed email/password authentication using scrypt-based password hashing and a guest mode for demonstrating the application. AI-assisted development was an important part of our workflow. We used Kiro IDE to accelerate frontend development, organize implementation tasks through specifications, improve navigation and accessibility, and develop a reusable API integration layer.
Kiro was particularly useful when configuring Google OAuth. It helped us troubleshoot credential setup, callback URLs, and authentication configuration issues, allowing us to spend more time developing features rather than debugging setup problems. Our frontend was designed around reusable React components and consistent API interactions, helping us integrate multiple features into a cohesive student experience.
