Challenges we ran into

Inspiration

Students often struggle to access campus information, manage schedules, and keep track of academic activities across different platforms. We wanted to build a smart, unified campus assistant that makes student life easier through AI and voice interaction.

What it does

CampusPilot AI is an AI-powered campus assistant that helps students access academic information, manage schedules, and discover campus activities through natural conversations. Powered by Gemini AI, Model Context Protocol (MCP), and Alexa integration, it aims to provide an intuitive, hands-free experience.

How we built it

We developed the frontend using React and Tailwind CSS, the backend using Python and FastAPI, and the database using SQLite for the local MVP. We designed MCP tools to connect the AI agent with backend services and campus-related functions. Gemini API powers intelligent conversations, while Alexa integration enables voice-based interactions.

Challenges we faced

Integrating the AI agent with MCP servers, connecting the frontend and backend, managing environment variables, and preparing Alexa integration were key challenges. We focused on modular architecture, clear API communication, and testing individual components to make the system reliable and easier to extend.

What we learned

We gained practical experience in AI agent development, MCP architecture, API integration, database management, and voice assistant technologies. This project helped us understand how AI can make campus services more accessible and convenient.

What's next

We plan to improve Alexa integration, expand campus service tools, strengthen security, and migrate to cloud infrastructure for broader deployment.
