Inspiration

University life means juggling deadlines, quizzes, and attendance across multiple courses at once and it's easy for something to slip through the cracks. I've personally missed quiz announcements and lost track of assignment deadlines because everything lives in scattered emails and a fading memory. I wanted an assistant that actually watches this for me and tells me what matters, before it's too late.

What it does

CampusPilot AI reads your course emails and reasons about them; extracting deadlines, calculating grade-weight priority, and proactively alerting you the moment something urgent changes, like a moved deadline or a cancelled class. It also tracks attendance and warns before you risk exam eligibility (a real, high-stakes rule at many universities), generates practice quizzes from your own notes, and sends scheduled reminders as deadlines approach; all through natural conversation, not fixed commands.

How I built it

Built with caspian-sdk for a single AI identity across email and Discord, and Featherless.ai for reasoning via DeepSeek-V3.2. The agent uses real tool calling; the model itself decides which action to take (log a deadline, track attendance, generate a quiz) based on natural language, rather than matching rigid command syntax.

Challenges I ran into

This was my first time building an AI agent. I debugged everything from PowerShell quoting issues to Featherless concurrency limits to a subtle bug where the AI would claim it logged something it never actually did, which pushed me to rebuild the whole message handling architecture around proper tool calling instead of simple string matching.

What I learned

How multi-channel agent architecture actually works under the hood, how to design and debug AI tool calling, and how much testing real edge cases (not just happy paths) matters before calling something "done."

What's next

Fuzzy course-name matching, real Gmail inbox integration, and a class-wide broadcast mode so urgent alerts reach a whole class, not just one student.
