Accomplishments that I## Inspiration
The idea came from thinking about how dependent social media is on the internet. If someone has no Wi-Fi, weak service, or no mobile data, most social apps become almost useless. I wanted to create a platform that could still let people connect with others nearby even without an internet connection.
I also wanted the app to be more than just a social feed, so I added features like jobs, mini-games, and events where users can create events or RSVP.
What It Does
The project is an offline-first social media platform that allows users to connect with nearby people using Bluetooth and local device storage.
Users can:
- Create a local profile
- View and create posts
- Like and comment on posts
- Message friends
- Share photos and videos
- Discover nearby users
- Play mini-games
- Browse jobs
- Create events
- RSVP to events
The main goal is to keep important parts of the platform usable even when there is no internet connection.
How I Built It
I built the app using React Native and Expo.
Instead of depending completely on a traditional backend, the app stores important information locally on the user's device using local storage. The project is designed to use Bluetooth and peer-to-peer communication so nearby devices can discover each other and exchange information directly.
The social feed, profiles, likes, comments, messages, events, games, and other data are designed around an offline-first structure.
Challenges I Faced
One of the biggest challenges was figuring out how to make a social media platform work without a normal internet-based backend.
Bluetooth also has limitations, especially when transferring larger files such as photos and videos. Another challenge was making sure data could be stored locally and synchronized between devices without creating duplicate posts, likes, comments, or messages.
Working within the hackathon time limit also meant I had to focus on the most important features first and simplify some of the more advanced peer-to-peer functionality.
What I Learned
This project taught me a lot about offline-first applications, local data storage, Bluetooth communication, peer-to-peer networking, and how social applications normally depend on backend servers.
I also learned how important it is to plan features around limitations instead of trying to build everything at once.
What's Next
In the future, I would like to improve the peer-to-peer system so information can move between more devices, improve media sharing, add stronger encryption for private messages, and make the offline network more reliable over larger areas.
The long-term goal is to create a social platform that can keep communities connected even when traditional internet access is limited or unavailable.'m proud of
