Inspiration
Finding a parking space on a busy university campus can be frustrating, time-consuming, and stressful—especially for faculty members who have tight schedules. At Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, teachers often face delays due to overcrowded parking areas and the lack of a centralized parking management system. This challenge inspired us to create Campus Parking, a smart solution designed to simplify parking and improve the daily campus experience.
What it does
Campus Parking is an intelligent parking management system developed specifically for university faculty. It allows teachers to register, log in, add their vehicles, view real-time parking slot availability, and reserve parking spaces in advance. The system also enables users to cancel reservations, monitor booking history, and manage multiple vehicles from a single dashboard. By providing live parking updates, Campus Parking helps reduce congestion, saves time, and ensures a seamless parking experience.
How we built it
We built Campus Parking using modern web development technologies. The frontend was designed with a responsive and user-friendly interface to ensure smooth navigation across devices. The backend handles user authentication, parking slot management, reservation processing, and real-time data updates. A database stores user information, vehicle details, booking records, and parking slot statuses. We also implemented role-based access, allowing administrators to monitor and manage the entire parking system efficiently.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was implementing real-time parking slot updates while maintaining data consistency during simultaneous bookings. Preventing double-booking of parking spaces required careful backend logic and transaction handling. Another challenge was designing an intuitive user interface that remained simple while offering multiple features. Integrating vehicle management, reservation history, and live slot tracking into a seamless workflow took significant planning and testing.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of developing a fully functional smart parking solution that addresses a real-world problem faced by university faculty. Successfully implementing real-time slot availability, secure booking, vehicle management, and reservation tracking was a major achievement. We also created a clean, modern interface that makes the system easy to use for all faculty members, regardless of technical expertise.
What we learned
This project taught us valuable lessons in full-stack development, database design, and real-time system architecture. We gained hands-on experience in solving concurrency issues, designing scalable systems, and creating intuitive user experiences. Most importantly, we learned how technology can be used to solve practical problems and improve everyday life on campus.
What's next for Campus Parking
Our future plans include integrating QR code-based parking verification, automated entry and exit systems, mobile app support, and AI-powered parking recommendations. We also aim to add student parking support, predictive analytics for peak parking hours, and integration with campus security systems. Ultimately, we envision Campus Parking becoming a complete smart mobility solution for modern university campuses.
