Inspiration

Campus OS was inspired by the everyday challenges university students face while managing academics across multiple disconnected platforms. Class routines live in Google Sheets, discussions happen in messaging apps, grades are tracked manually, and notes are scattered across different tools. We wanted to eliminate this fragmentation by building a single, intelligent workspace—a true Campus Operating System that brings every essential academic tool together in one place.

What it does

Campus OS is an AI-powered student productivity workspace that centralizes the entire university experience. It automatically syncs class routines from Google Sheets, tracks CGPA and attendance in real time, provides secure one-to-one and group messaging, and includes a Gemini-powered Campus Copilot for answering questions, summarizing notes, generating study materials, and formatting documents.

The platform is fully responsive and installable as an offline-first Progressive Web App (PWA), allowing students to stay productive even with unreliable internet connectivity.

How we built it

We built Campus OS using React 18, Vite, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS to deliver a fast, responsive, and modern user experience. Smooth animations were implemented using Motion to create intuitive transitions without overwhelming users.

Class routines are synchronized directly from Google Sheets, while offline functionality is powered by vite-plugin-pwa and custom service workers. The AI-powered Campus Copilot is built using the Google Gemini SDK through a secure server-side API, enabling personalized academic assistance while keeping API keys protected.

To ensure scalability, the application follows a modular architecture with reusable components, centralized type definitions, and optimized code splitting.

Challenges we ran into

One major challenge was designing a workspace that remained intuitive on mobile devices despite containing many powerful features. We solved this by implementing a single-screen sliding workspace that behaves similarly to a native mobile application.

Synchronizing schedules from public Google Sheets without unnecessary re-renders or excessive network requests was another challenge. We implemented efficient state comparison techniques to update data only when schedule changes are actually detected.

As the project grew, maintaining clean architecture became increasingly important. Separating major features into modular components helped keep the codebase maintainable and scalable.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built an all-in-one productivity platform instead of multiple disconnected tools.
  • Successfully integrated automatic Google Sheets routine synchronization.
  • Developed an AI-powered Campus Copilot using Google's Gemini models.
  • Created secure student messaging with individual and group conversations.
  • Implemented real-time CGPA and attendance tracking.
  • Delivered a fully responsive offline-first Progressive Web App.
  • Designed a clean, modern interface optimized for both desktop and mobile devices.

What we learned

This project reinforced that great software is built around solving real user problems rather than simply adding features.

We learned the importance of modular architecture, offline-first design, secure AI integration, and performance optimization. We also discovered how thoughtful UI design—including typography, spacing, and subtle animations—can dramatically improve usability and reduce cognitive load.

Most importantly, we learned that AI becomes significantly more valuable when deeply integrated into users' daily workflows instead of existing as a separate tool.

What's next for Campus OS

Our vision is to evolve Campus OS into the complete digital operating system for universities.

Future plans include:

  • AI-generated personalized study plans
  • Assignment and deadline management
  • Smart lecture transcription and note generation
  • Faculty and teacher dashboards
  • University announcements and event management
  • Collaborative document editing
  • Cloud synchronization across multiple devices
  • Learning analytics and academic insights
  • Multi-university support with customizable modules

We aim to make Campus OS the central platform where students can manage every aspect of university life through one intelligent, secure, and AI-powered workspace.
