Smart Campus Navigation and Facility Asset Booking System
Inspiration
College campuses have multiple buildings, classrooms, seminar halls, and equipment that students may need to locate and book. Finding campus locations and managing facility reservations through separate processes can be time-consuming.
We were inspired to develop a centralized web application that makes campus navigation and facility booking easier for students while helping administrators manage campus resources efficiently.
What It Does
Our project combines campus navigation and facility booking in a single web application.
Key features include:
- Campus Navigation: An interactive map helps users explore campus locations and identify destinations.
- Facility Booking: Students can check and reserve available campus facilities.
- Equipment Booking: Users can book available equipment for their academic and campus activities.
- Booking Management: A centralized system stores and manages booking information.
- Database Integration: MySQL stores application data and booking records.
How We Built It
We developed the frontend using React.js to create an interactive and user-friendly interface. Java with Spring Boot powers the backend and handles application requests and business logic. MySQL is used for database management, while Leaflet provides interactive map functionality.
The frontend communicates with the backend APIs to retrieve information and perform booking operations. We also deployed the frontend and backend online to make the application accessible beyond a single local computer.
Challenges We Faced
One of our main challenges was integrating the frontend, backend, database, and interactive map into a single application.
Deploying the application required additional work to configure cloud database connectivity, environment variables, API communication, and cross-origin access. We worked through these integration challenges to make the application function as a connected web system.
What We Learned
Through this project, we gained practical experience in full-stack web development, REST API integration, relational database management, interactive maps, GitHub-based development, and cloud deployment.
We also learned how important it is to connect individual modules reliably and design a system around a real-world user need.
Future Improvements
Future improvements could include smarter facility recommendations, booking-demand forecasting, personalized campus navigation, and analytics to help administrators make better use of campus resources.
Conclusion
The Smart Campus Navigation and Facility Asset Booking System aims to make campus navigation and resource reservation more convenient by bringing both functions together in one accessible platform.
