Inspiration

Campus Loop is inspired by our vision to reduce the amount of waste of usable food and items in the world. University students are often looking to save money, and could make good use of second-hand items that may end up being otherwise discarded. We also want to brighten the day of those who use our service, so we've added a game in Flappy Degree.

What it does

Users post items or food that they want to sell or give away, and other users can request to pick it up. Google Maps is integrated to aid users in reaching the specified pick-up location, and OpenAI is integrated in order to quickly make postings based on a simple image taken by the seller. While they wait for the buyer to pick up the item(s) they're selling/giving away, users can play Flappy Degree and compete for a high score.

How we built it

We began by building the framework for a side-scroller game with the help of Claude, then manually fine-tuned it to ensure the game came out as we liked. We then came up with an idea for an application that we really liked (Campus Loop), so we decided to shift our focus to that and add the game into the application as a bonus feature. Campus Loop was made as a simple online marketplace with the help of Claude, then integration of Google Maps and OpenAI Vision were added.

Challenges we ran into

Campus Loop originally required email verification, but there was a limit to account authentication imposed by the hosting service that would have severely hampered the website's functionality. To solve this, we changed the backend to remove email verification.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the application we created in Campus Loop, as we think this can have a positive impact on the community at UBC. We are also proud of the fact that we created it, stepping out of our comfort zone to code things we had never coded before such as the integration of OpenAI Vision and Google Maps via APIs.

What we learned

We learned how to create the CSS frontend to a website/application, as well has how to integrate other services into our application with the use of their APIs.

What's next for Campus Loop and Flappy Degree

What's next is integrating UBC ID or CWL verification into Campus Loop, as well as integrating restaurant menus to aid in the food marketplace side of the application.
