Being college students inspired us! We chose to solve the funding issue found within education because it's something that affects us as well. UC Merced is known for being a research-based university and is always looking for more funding, especially since Merced continues to grow.
Our code allows professors and students to go on our website and login with their school credentials to submit a research proposal. For professors, they are able to send in information regarding what their research lab may entail and the progress of their research. We wanted to make it inclusive to everyone on campus, not just the professors. Although students may not have their own research to submit proposals for, they're able to post for their clubs and organizations. The idea is to be user-friendly and make the process of something meant to difficult, into something easy and quick.
We used Visual Studio Code to create our HTML and CSS files to create the website. The Live Server extension on VS code allowed us to visually see how the site was looking while continuing to type in both our frontend and backend of the website.
We ran into a lot of challenges because none of us had a lot of prior experience with HTML and CSS. We have a lot of errors when it came to placement of things, such as wording and/or images. The backend was also difficult because there was an issue processing the code that would interpret all of the data.
We're super proud that we were all able to accomplish this as a team and even though we weren't able to completely finish what we wanted, we still came through with much more knowledge than we had 36 hours ago.
We learned about how to properly use both HTML and CSS. We got the chance to understand the patterns that come along with using these languages and it made us have that much more appreciation for the websites we use daily.
We'll be continuing to work on this website because there are still plenty of ideas for it. Whether or not this could be something great, we all had so much fun making it. We want to continue working on it to see if we'll be able to implement the rest of our ideas to finish up the site.
