Inspiration

We were inspired by the way the Joe Biden app uses social connections to encourage citizens to register and go out and vote. We wanted to create a similar platform that used social connections to encourage coronavirus precaution compliance amongst a specific community.

What it does

Our website has the functionality of allowing users to send anonymous emails to other users from their school, nudging them to better comply with precautions, continue complying as well as they are, or sending them a virtual hug. It also sends users a weekly survey, collecting thoughts on how well their campus is complying, and tracking this data over time.

How we built it

We used Canva to create a prototype of the website. We then used HTML, CSS, javascript, and git to begin to implement the website. We used a name.com domain and connected it to our GitHub pages, rerouting the IP addresses to reconfigure the DNS server.

Challenges we ran into

We wanted to code something in our website that required javascript, but none of us have worked with javascript before. We worked with one of the DivHacks mentors to resolve our problem. Since this was our first hackathon, we had difficulties collaborating on GitHub, but the workshop was helpful in explaining the workflow.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have acquired an actual domain and made a project that we can show our friends and family. One specific implementation we are proud of is the auto-filling of the email message box upon clicking a type of email to send. Additionally, we are proud to have come up with this creative idea.

What we learned

On the technical side, we learned and used many new skills such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Canva, Git, how to register and implement a domain, and use GitHub Pages. We also learned how to improve our team building and communication skills.

What's next for Campus Covid Team

We plan to keep working on the project. We were not able to code each element of the prototype website, specifically the sending of emails and data collection and analysis through backend development.
