Inspiration

College students often struggle to manage assignments, examinations, projects, and deadlines at the same time. Important tasks can get scattered across notebooks, calendars, and to-do lists, making it difficult to decide what to work on first. We wanted to build more than another productivity dashboard. We imagined a conversational assistant that allows students to explain their situation naturally and receive practical, personalized help. This inspired us to create Campus Companion, a student-focused assistant designed to turn everyday conversations into organized actions and achievable study plans.

What it does

Campus Companion helps students organize their academic responsibilities through a conversational interface. Key features include: Conversational assistance: Students can describe their academic tasks in natural language. Smart task management: Add, view, and track assignments with due dates and completion status. Deadline Conflict Resolver: Identify competing deadlines and suggest which tasks to prioritize. Personalized study planning: Generate a structured study plan based on upcoming deadlines and available time. Persistent storage: Store tasks and their status in an SQL database so information remains available between sessions. Our goal is to make academic planning simpler, more interactive, and less overwhelming.

How we built it

We are a two-member team building Campus Companion using familiar web technologies while exploring conversational assistant design. Our technology stack consists of: HTML for the application structure. CSS for a clean, responsive interface. JavaScript for chat interactions and dynamic updates. Python and Flask for backend logic and API endpoints. SQLite for storing tasks, deadlines, and completion status.

Challenges we ran into

One of our main challenges is making the assistant genuinely useful instead of producing generic responses. Prioritizing multiple deadlines requires clear rules, realistic scheduling, and careful handling of incomplete information.

What we learned

Through this project, we aim to strengthen our understanding of full-stack development, including frontend-backend communication, REST API design, SQL database operations, and persistent data management. We are also learning how to turn a real-world problem into a focused product, design an intuitive user experience, divide responsibilities within a small team, and test a complete workflow from user input to database update.

What's next for Campus Companion

We plan to refine the conversational experience, improve the study-planning logic, test the application with realistic student scenarios, and demonstrate how Campus Companion transforms an overwhelming list of academic responsibilities into a clear action plan.
