Inspiration

University campuses generate large amounts of recyclable waste every day, yet most sustainability initiatives fail due to lack of verification, transparency, and meaningful incentives. Inspired by real-world circular economy pilots in Latin American universities, this project explores how AI can bridge the gap between physical actions and trustworthy digital rewards.

The core question was simple: how can we verify sustainable actions at scale without adding friction or centralized trust?

What we built

Nudos AI is an AI-powered platform that tracks, verifies, and optimizes sustainable actions in university campuses. It combines computer vision, data pipelines, and AI agents to transform real-world recycling events into transparent, data-driven incentives.

Users interact with the system by submitting evidence of sustainable actions (such as recycling events). AI models analyze and validate these inputs, generate structured environmental data, and feed optimization agents that improve routing, verification confidence, and incentive allocation over time.

How we built it

The project was built end-to-end using DigitalOcean Gradient™ AI:

  • Gradient™ AI was used to train and deploy computer vision models for image-based verification.
  • GPU-backed workloads enabled fast experimentation and iteration.
  • AI agents orchestrate verification, scoring, and feedback loops.
  • The application is deployed as a production-ready service using DigitalOcean’s unified cloud stack.

This full-stack approach allowed us to go beyond a prototype and ship a working, scalable AI application.

Challenges & learnings

One of the main challenges was balancing model accuracy with deployment simplicity. Gradient™ AI’s integrated workflows made it possible to iterate quickly while keeping the system production-ready.

We also learned that AI-driven sustainability tools must prioritize trust, explainability, and usability to have real-world impact. This project reinforced the importance of building AI systems that are not only intelligent, but also socially meaningful and scalable.

Impact

Nudos AI demonstrates how AI can support circular economy initiatives by providing transparent verification, actionable insights, and scalable infrastructure. While the current implementation focuses on university campuses, the architecture is designed to be replicable across institutions and cities.
