Inspiration
As Washingtonians, we have first hand experienced the power of nature and hiking to bring people together. The Seattle Freeze may be a big thing in the city, but the second we stepped outside into the comfort of nature when hiking, it's nonexistent. Meeting new people on hikes, you are greeted by "Great job"s, "Almost there"s and "You got it!". Hiking allows people to create a new sense of community away from the hustle and bustle of the city, while also allowing people to connect with nature to promote sustainability and understand the impacts of climate change. We noticed and experienced that when planning a trip to national parks it can be both confusing and fragmented. Travelers have to check multiple websites for trail conditions, lodging, road closures, and amenities. Often, finding an itinerary requires looking through multiple blog posts, social media posts, and park detail pages. We wanted to make planning an adventure a breeze by creating a single, fun platform that brings everything together, from trails to alerts near the park to several different kind of itineraries, everyone can find their perfect adventure in one spot.
What it does
CampOut Loud is a one-stop platform for national park enthusiasts to easily plan their trips and explore national parks without leaving the app. It showcases alerts and trails from the National Park, as well as 3 different itineraries to fit any one: Family-Friendly and Relaxed, Adventure-Seeking and Outdoorsy, Photography-Focused and Scenic.
How we built it
Frontend: Next.js, HTML, React with TailwindCSS, Google Stitch BackEnd: NPS API for park data, Overpass API, Python, Gemini API for itineraries & image acquisition
Challenges we ran into
Getting the data for the trails from an API was incredibly difficult as it wasn't available in multiple sites, so we had to try using another API with Overpass. Getting it to parse itineraries effectively in order for it to accurately display on the front-end was difficult.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built an MVP that is pretty functional and it's a product we care about and will use.
What we learned
We learned how to use different resources to create this website.
What's next for CampOut Loud
We hope to add more itineraries, personalization, expanding the parks we serve, optimizing our model for itinerary generation, and adding weather, trail conditions. We also hope to create a special page for the current day for each national park.
