Inspiration
We were inspired by the countless times we’ve gone camping, only to find ourselves stuck with struggling to come up with meal ideas. With limited ingredients and cooking tools, it can be tough to create enjoyable and interesting meals. We wanted to solve this problem and make meal planning while camping more fun and effortless for our users!
What it does
Campin' Cookin' helps users create unique recipes based on the ingredients they have on hand. Users can select up to 30 ingredients and choose a meal preference: quick and easy, unique, or healthy. The Gemini API then generates three meal ideas for them to try! The app features fun campfire graphics and vibrant food images, creating an engaging experience while you plan your next meal in the great outdoors.
How we built it
We built this project using React Native for cross-platform functionality, Node.js for the back-end, and the Gemini API to generate recipe suggestions. The front-end was designed with hand-drawn pixel art, which we created ourselves, with some assets from Stardew Valley.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was configuring the Gemini API and refining our prompts to generate consistent and relevant recipe data. At first, we received mixed results that were difficult to parse, but after tweaking our approach, we were able to refine the data output into something more reliable.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of our custom artwork and animations, particularly creating a unique animation for the loading screen that enhances the overall user experience. We also feel great about how we were able to combine our technical and artistic skills to create something both functional and fun!
What we learned
We gained valuable experience working with React Native and refining our art skills to create custom pixel animations. We also learned how to integrate and effectively utilize the Gemini API for AI-powered recipe generation and fine-tuned our approach to get the most relevant results.
What's next for Campin' Cookin'
Moving forward, we plan to implement social features, allowing users to share their favorite recipes and send them to friends. We’re also looking into expanding the recipe database and adding new meal categories, making the app even more versatile for different types of outdoor adventures!
