Inspiration

Our inspiration for "Camp-Us" comes from the shared experiences and concerns of university students, just like us. We've all faced moments of uncertainty and vulnerability when walking alone on campus, especially during late-night journeys. We believe that no student should ever feel unsafe or isolated in these situations.

With "Camp-Us," we aim to create a solution that addresses these concerns head-on. We want to foster a sense of community and togetherness among students by connecting them with others heading in the same direction.

Additionally, our inspiration extends to providing peace of mind. We know how important it is for our loved ones to know we're safe, so we've incorporated automatic notifications to let friends and family know when we've safely arrived home.

What it does

Walking Buddies: Camp-Us helps you find fellow students going in the same direction, so you can walk home together, making late-night journeys safer and more enjoyable.

Automatic Notifications: It notifies your chosen friends and family when you leave a building and safely arrive home. You're never alone; they're always in the loop.

Sunset Alerts: Set your home point, and Camp-Us calculates the time and distance to get there before sunset. You'll receive a notification, ensuring you're aware of your surroundings as daylight fades.

Real-Time Location Sharing: Stay connected with your friends' locations in real-time, offering peace of mind and enabling quick check-ins when needed.

How we built it

We used Figma to create a Mock-up with heavy focus on our user-interface. We wanted to make it easily accessible and quick to use on the go. Therefore, moving forward, we began building our app with java and XML in Android Studio.

Challenges we ran into

As three inexperienced programmers, it was difficult for us to find a way to implement a complex concept through programming. However, we were able to over come this to our best ability by using tools such as Figma to express our ideas while also putting in extra effort to learn and develop new skills in areas we were lacking. Additionally, we all are unfamiliar with each other and we also had to overcome the boundary of working on a rigorous project with new people for the first time. However, we managed to resolve this issue as well with through communication and clear set of values.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

As novice programmers, we've embraced a steep learning curve. We've gained valuable experience in Android app development, user interface design, and programming concepts along the way. Furthermore, building Camp-Us has been a collaborative effort, and we are proud of how we learned to work effectively as a team, communicate ideas, and support each other's growth within such a short time period.

What we learned

Our understanding of user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design principles has grown. We've learned to create intuitive and user-friendly interfaces that prioritize user needs. Furthermore, the development process has challenged us to become better problem solvers. We've encountered and addressed technical issues and learned to find creative solutions. Finally, we've also learned firsthand how technology can be used to address real-world problems. Camp-Us isn't just a project; it's a practical application of our skills to enhance safety and community on campus.

What's next for Camp-us

In the hear future we plan to finish implementing the features in our Figma mock-up as well as integrate APIs such the Google Maps API and the Sunrise / Sunset times API. This will improve our app and allow for a better user experience as well. Additionally, we also plan to explore the security aspect as we understand that location apps like Camp-Us may also be abused by some users in harmful ways. Therefore, a next step in terms of expanding the project would be to enhance and strengthen security features.
