Camp Klepto

Camp Klepto is inspired by the stealthy tactical game Metal Gear Solid.

Instead of military bases, you sneak through summer cabins. Instead of soldiers, you dodge camp staff. It delivers the thrill of sneaking, hiding, and outsmarting sharper opponents — but in a playful, lighthearted world where the mission is to grab loot and earn bragging rights as camp’s top thief.

We used Blender as our primary modeling software.

Challenges We Ran Into

The biggest challenge we faced was NPC behavior. Getting them to act believably without overshadowing the player was a constant tug-of-war. NPCs tend to have a “mind of their own,” sometimes spotting players from across the map or getting stuck in a loop around a picnic table.

Even more difficult was separating NPC actions from player actions. Early on, our NPCs were borrowing parts of the player system, which led to hilarious but game-breaking issues — like staff NPCs spawning other NPCs mid-game or acting as if they were player-controlled. Untangling those systems was a major breakthrough and made the game feel much more stable.

We also tackled:

  • Optimization: Reducing load times by packing assets onto a single texture sheet and simplifying models without losing the camp’s cozy vibe.
  • Performance balance: Ensuring multiple NPCs could run patrol routes without crushing frame rates.

What We’re Proud Of

  • NPC Intuition: Despite their quirks, our camp staff NPCs feel alive. They react, patrol, and keep players on edge, which adds tension to every heist.
  • Asset Optimization: Combining textures into one sheet was a game-changer. It gave us smoother loading and more room for creative props.
  • The Atmosphere: Sneaking through cabins at night with only the crunch of gravel and the sweep of a flashlight beam feels just right.

What We Learned

  • How tricky it is to separate NPC systems from player systems — one small overlap can cause chaos.
  • Optimization is never “done”; you keep shaving, trimming, and testing until performance feels invisible.
  • Sometimes the quirkiest NPC bugs end up being hilarious — and worth keeping for the fun factor.

What’s Next

  • NPC Upgrades: Smarter patrols, smoother animations, and voice responses to really sell the illusion of “living” camp staff.
  • Expanded Environments: More cabins, modular items, and unique loot to keep players exploring.
  • Dynamic Difficulty: Scaling NPC awareness and coordination so both first-timers and veteran sneaks feel challenged.
